About Approachable Web Design

I am located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and specialize in building web sites for small local businesses.

I have been involved in designing and building web sites since the web was created back in the early 1990's. At the time I was a scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) where we collaborated with researchers at CERN (in Europe) via Mosaic, the first graphical web browser. In 1993, I created the first official web site for LANL and helped form and manage their Web services group.

In 1996 I formed Zugg Software to produce customer-driven Internet software. I wrote the www.zuggsoft.com web site from scratch, which has evolved through many iterations and improvements over the year, becoming the central point of communications and ecommerce between Zugg Software and it's customers. At that time, most of my web development work focused on internal sites.

I formed Approachable Web Design in 2008 to bring my extensive web background and experience to other small businesses, especially those located in the Colorado Springs area.

My Philosophy

I believe in building a trust relationship with my customers. Through a clear understanding of my customer's business, I can produce a better web site customized to their needs for less than many large web design firms.

The focus of my work is to produce a clean and functional web site that helps my customers better reach and interact with their own customers. While visual design is important, I stress the difference between the interactive web media and traditional print media. The purpose of your web site should be to communicate effectively with your customers and not just to recycle your existing glossy marketing brochures.

I build web sites based upon web standards, ensuring that your site is highly ranked with search engines, but without employing any optimization scams. Your site will be fully accessible to all of your customers, regardless of any disabilities, and will be viewable in any modern standards-based web browser.

I also believe that you should retain control over the content of your own web site. You should be able to modify the content of your site without needing to contact a web designer. While design and layout changes might still require technical expertise, keeping your site up-to-date should be quick and easy for your own staff. Keeping your site information updated is one of the best ways to attract new customers and keep your site highly ranked.

My Experience

For those interested in technical jargon, I have up-to-date experience in the following relevant software and technologies: HTML, CSS, Javascript, PHP, MySQL, Drupal, Joomla, CodeIgniter, Delphi, Dreamweaver, Fireworks. I also have past experience with: Perl, Lotus Notes, ASP, ColdFusion, MS SQL Server.

You can view a sample of my web-design work in my Portfolio. My art background is in calligraphy and medieval manuscript illumination.
